Verantel and Smokeball

Smokeball is practice-management software for small law firms. It holds a firm's matters, documents, time, and billing, with an AI assistant called Archie AI. Verantel is an AI intake interviewer. A prospective client tells their story in a web chat, and Verantel asks one question at a time until it has what your firm needs. The Verantel Smokeball integration puts each new intake in front of your attorneys in Smokeball.

How Verantel works with Smokeball

Verantel runs the interview with the prospective client. When the interview ends, Verantel writes a record of the matter. Verantel then sends the new lead, with its Verantel record, into Smokeball. The prospective client arrives as a Smokeball contact on the lead.

Your firm connects its Smokeball account from the Verantel dashboard. After that, each finished interview reaches Smokeball with no work from your staff.

What your attorneys see in Smokeball

Your attorneys open Smokeball and find the new lead with its Verantel record. The record covers:

  • the short summary
  • the deadlines
  • the facts, grouped by topic, each linked to the client's own words
  • each legal matter, with its practice area and state
  • the people and organizations involved
  • how well the matter fits your firm
  • what an attorney would gather next
  • the full transcript

An attorney who doubts a fact follows its link and reads what the client said. Verantel is not a lawyer and gives no legal advice. Your attorneys decide what the facts mean and whether to take the matter.

From there, your team works the lead in Smokeball as it works any other. The record sits with the lead from the start.

About Smokeball

Smokeball describes itself as AI legal practice management software. It says it serves more than 7,000 law firms and 34,000 users worldwide. Its site says Smokeball is built for solo lawyers, small law firms, and growing legal teams. Smokeball has its headquarters in Sydney and offices in Chicago and London.

Smokeball lists these main features:

  • intake and lead management
  • matters that hold a firm's cases, documents, and deadlines
  • a library of more than 20,000 automated legal forms
  • a client portal and email management
  • AutoTime, which tracks time automatically
  • invoicing, trust accounting, and Smokeball Payments
  • calendaring, tasks and workflows, and firm insights
  • Archie AI, which works inside a matter to draft, review, and answer questions

Smokeball sells four plans: Bill, Boost, Grow, and Prosper+. It prices each firm by quote and publishes no per-user price. Prosper+ includes lead management and intake. Boost and Grow offer intake as an add-on.

Smokeball has added AI through 2026. In March, Smokeball and Thomson Reuters announced a partnership to bring Thomson Reuters' CoCounsel Legal AI into Smokeball. In May, Smokeball launched Archie AI: Next Generation. In August, it refreshed its brand around the mission "Powering People-Law." In October, it announced that Westlaw Deep Research would come into Archie AI later that month.

Where the data lives

Verantel keeps each firm's interviews in a database of the firm's own, on Verantel's server or the firm's own. The lead and its record travel to Smokeball, which keeps them under your firm's account there. Verantel stores nothing on the way.
